Job Purpose:
Power Roll (“PRL”) has proven its unique micro-groove solar technology in >200cm2 modules, which contain over 80,000 individual solar cells, in its pilot facility in the North East of England. PRL is working with world leading research partners to further improve and scale-up this new innovative technology to market.
PRL are looking to recruit a Perovskite Scale-up Scientist based at the pilot facility in County Durham. The successful candidate will work on development of PRL PV modules. The main area of work will involve developing perovskite ink formulations tailored to PRL’s microgroove architecture. The role also involves the selection and use of appropriate materials and device characterisation techniques for the  development of Power Roll technology.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Development of perovskite ink formulations for PRL technologies, characterisation of materials and devices: 
Optimise the perovskite ink formulations for PRL substrates for stable and efficient materials
Work alongside the Scale-up Scientist and the Coating Engineer to scale-up the perovskite ink formulations to the pilot line 
Drive the development process through detailed characterisation of the perovskite layer, devices and interfaces, in working alongside the Perovskite Physicist and the wider team
Identify, plan and lead work with external partners in achieving the company’s goals
Identify in advance, plan and implement resources required for efficient work progress
Planning, managing and reporting on development trials in a timely manner
Oversite of large data sets and identification of trends and conclusions
Keeping up to date with relevant research literature and technical breakthroughs in the field
Develop and improve internal / external testing regimes
Support the wider solar team in all aspects of PRL technology
Prepare and implement relevant H&S documentation (e.g. COSHH assessments and Risk Assessments)
Create and implement process documentation such as SOPs and testing protocols
Identify and capture company’s IP and know-how
Ensuring good laboratory practices across the company

Attainments / Experience (what qualifications / training / experience is required by the person)  PhD or EngD (Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a closely related field, or master with >5-year equivalent experience) focussing on perovskite materials.

>5-year laboratory experience of perovskite solar cell development with the focus on improving perovskite formulations for efficiency and stability.

Competence in material characterization using methods such as XRD, UV-Vis-NIR, FTIR, PL, NMR, XPS, SEM, AFM etc.

Deep subject matter knowledge on the strategies towards stable and efficient perovskite formulations, from literature, laboratory experience and from interaction with experts in the field.

Evidence of strong technical skills with an ability to plan development trials, critically analyse and interpret data, identify bottlenecks, and recommend and implement strategies to address them.

Experienced and knowledgeable in a broad range of characterisation techniques suitable for perovskite solar cells and modules development.

Experience of developing and implementing a clear approach to complex issues with the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others to resolve or mitigate.
Experience of developing inks for scalable printing techniques, such as slot die coating.

Experience of developing inks for flexible substrates, such as PET.

Good understanding of industrial requirements towards optoelectronics manufacturing processes, including supply chain and mass production.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills (What type of knowledge and abilities are required by the person)  Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to write clear and concise reports, summarising the essence of complex issues and reaching well-argued and clear conclusions and recommendations.Knowledge, skills and experience in analysing large datasets using automated analytic tools (e.g. Excel, Minitab, Python, Matlab, Labview).

Experience of work in an industry environment. 

Driving license.
